Skerbeck Family Carnival takes its safety program and responsibilities as a carnival midway provider seriously. Skerbeck Family Carnival's track record on consistent safety is phenomenal. You can rely on SFC to provide safe equipment and passionate personnel.
Policies, guidelines, and procedures have been designed to assure business is conducted in a manner that provides a safe environment for customers and workers. The safety program consists of four key elements – Equipment Inspections, Equipment Maintenance, Employee Training, and Customer Education.
1. Equipment Inspections
Ride inspections occur daily prior to opening by inspectors, with proper documentation. In addition, third-party consultants inspect and perform non-destructive testing of equipment on an annual basis. Skerbeck Family Carnival is also inspected and licensed by State officials allowing the company to operate in Michigan. Michigan has mandated safety inspection codes per state legislation.
2. Equipment Maintenance
Skerbeck Family Carnival believes that a robust preventative maintenance schedule for rides is an important component of safe equipment operation. Manufacturers’ scheduled maintenance procedures are performed. SFC utilizes its 90-foot-tall, maintenance facility to perform annual equipment work.
3. Employee Training
Safety coordinators receive technical qualifications through training sponsored by the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials (NAARSO) and Amusement Industry Manufacturers and Suppliers International (AIMS). In fact, our very own Dustin Skerbeck has enough qualifications he could inspect for the state! ServSafe certifications are also held within the management and supervisory positions. New hires receive detailed training prior to reporting to their designated work space. Our entire workforce attends frequent safety meetings which are used to provide on-going training and to give the organization a forum for open discussion of employee observations and/or concerns. Example topics at safety meetings include: fire safety, staying alert (avoiding fatigue), the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and the lost child plan. Teamed with constant ongoing communication throughout the midway by supervisor checks and radios, SFC has the safety performance qualities ensuring a safe midway experience.
4. Customer Education Height Signage
Skerbeck Carnival utilizes professional signs at each ticket box as well as at each ride to communicate height and weight requirements. It is important for customers to understand that the ride manufacturers and insurance companies establish the height and weight requirements in order to ensure the safety of midway customers, children in particular. There are also rider responsibility signs at each ride. Other signs such as caution signs, tripping hazards, or employees only are placed on the midway when necessary. Customers, please be aware of your surroundings and the signs placed throughout the carnival midway; they are in place for the safety of you and your loved ones.
