Corporate citizenship refers to the way a company integrates basic
social values with everyday business practices. Corporate citizenship recognizes that
businesses have a responsibility to respect people, the community, and the environment in
a way that adheres to high ethical standards. Doing these things instills consumer
confidence, ensures business success, and benefits the community as well.
Skerbeck Carnival believes this is an important responsibility and strives to achieve good
corporate citizenship through the following:
- Maintaining a high standard of business ethics;
- Working as part of the community;
- Protecting the environment; and
- Engaging in fair workplace relations.
Business Ethics
Skerbeck Carnival has been a family owned and operated amusement business for more than
150 years. In order to transition successfully from one generation to the next, it has
been imperative that the standard of business ethics be very high. Many festival
committees and fair boards have been doing business with Skerbeck Carnival for decades.

In 2006, the International Association of Fairs and Exhibitions worked in conjunction with
the Outdoor Amusement Business Association (IAFE/OABA) to develop business ethics best
practices in 2006. These best practices are wholly endorsed and followed by Skerbeck
Carnival and include the following:
- Establish positive lines of communication;
- Disclose information accurately and truthfully;
- Never compromise safety and keep the public interest above that of the individual,
and/or carnival at all times; and
- Social interaction between event coordinators and Skerbeck Carnival observes all
statutory requirements related to the exchange of gratuities and is kept balanced between
both parties.
Community Work
Most Skerbeck Carnival festivals are structured as fundraisers for local community
organizations. Local organizations such as the Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists, Jaycees, and a
variety of church organizations, etc. sponsor and coordinate festival events. Skerbeck
Carnival works with these sponsoring organizations to provide a carnival midway and then
compensates them with a portion of the event proceeds. Doing this creates a positive
relationship with the community and fosters community outreach opportunities for the local
organizations. In this manner, revenue earned in a community by Skerbeck Carnival is given
back to the community via organizations that are best positioned to serve and redistribute
the money.
Protecting the Environment
Skerbeck Carnival recognizes the importance of protecting the environment.
In order to minimize air emissions, Skerbeck Carnival works with event sponsors at larger
venues to utilize low-polluting sources of City energy instead of the shows large
portable generators. Additionally, the proper maintenance of diesel tractor trailers is an
important element of minimizing air emissions, and Skerbeck Carnival employs several
diesel mechanics with expertise in this area.
In order to minimize water use and disposal issues, Skerbeck Carnival operates using the
least amount of water possible to support the midway and its living quarters. Since the
shows living quarters and food concessions are self-contained units, any generated
wastewater must be held in storage containers and taken off-site for proper disposal.
Storage containers are limited to a given size and as a result, the minimum amount of
water is utilized at all events.
In order to minimize solid waste generation and disposal
issues, Skerbeck Carnival works with event sponsors interested in utilizing recyclable
containers. Refuse from the midway and living quarters is picked up and disposed of
properly in appropriately labeled dumpsters. As the public becomes more involved with
recycling initiatives, Skerbeck Carnival anticipates this area of pollution prevention
will grow and will continue to work with event sponsors regarding recycling initiatives.
Workplace Relations
Skerbeck Carnival expects a tremendous amount from the workforce. In exchange for a
professional workforce, Skerbeck Carnival participates in fair workplace relations through
compensation at rates consistent with the industry standards. Additionally, the workforce
is provided with housing, utilities, freshly laundered uniforms, and transportation.
